September 13, 2024 — Shenzhen, China is in the midst of an electric wagon boom, with an increasing number of manufacturers producing long-roof electric vehicles (EVs). Today, a new contender has emerged to take the crown as the leading electric wagon in China: the Denza Z9 GT. The model, developed by Denza, a premium brand under BYD—China’s largest EV manufacturer—aims to redefine the segment with cutting-edge technology and striking design.
Denza, known for its polarizing designs, introduces the Z9 GT with a bold rear-end styling. Despite mixed opinions, the vehicle is widely considered the brand’s most attractive model yet. However, its true strength lies beneath the surface, featuring BYD’s new E3 motor system with three electric motors—two in the back and one in the front. The vehicle comes in two powertrains: a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and a pure electric variant. The pure EV produces 640 kW (approximately 850 horsepower), while the PHEV boasts a total range of 1,100 km when combining electric and gasoline power.

Denza has implemented its LFP blade batteries in both versions, with the pure electric Z9 GT offering a range of 630 km from a 100 kWh battery. The exterior of the Z9 GT is designed for distinction, and though the official rear cargo capacity remains undisclosed, it rivals the Zeekr 001.
One of the standout features is the Z9 GT’s 10-degree rear steer, similar to the Mercedes-Benz EQS, offering an impressive turning radius, smaller than a Mini Cooper. This feature proves particularly useful in tight urban spaces, although concerns over tire wear from the vehicle’s compass turn remain.

Inside, the Z9 GT’s cabin provides a luxurious experience with features such as a zero-gravity passenger seat, massaging and heated seats for all passengers, and an innovative heads-up display. A tri-screen configuration dominates the dashboard, although the UI and UX fall short of BYD’s foreign competitors. The rear passengers also benefit from advanced features, including individual vanity mirrors, electronically controlled air vents, and adjustable seating.
The Z9 GT is equipped with an air suspension system, significantly improving ride quality over BYD’s earlier models. It offers a sportier and more engaging driving experience than the Denza N7 SUV, largely due to its maneuverable rear-steer system. While the driving position is higher than expected for a GT wagon, the Z9 GT still delivers a satisfying performance, hitting 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds for the EV version and 3.6 seconds for the PHEV.

Although the Z9 GT is a strong contender in the electric wagon market, it faces competition from models like the Zeekr 001FR. However, it stands out as the most impressive Denza model to date, with pre-sale prices starting around $47,000 for the base electric model and going up to $59,000 for the ultra PHEV version.
The Z9 GT is set to establish itself as a formidable player in the rapidly expanding Chinese EV market. While it may not dethrone all rivals, it certainly places Denza on a new trajectory.
