Beijing, September 21, 2024 – In the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicles, the Changan NEVO E07 has emerged as a standout from China, often dubbed the “Chinese Cybertruck.” However, on closer inspection, its rounded, aerodynamic design bears little resemblance to Tesla’s more angular Cybertruck. With a drag coefficient of 0.237 compared to the Cybertruck’s 0.34, the NEVO E07 is notably more efficient in terms of aerodynamics. Measuring slightly longer than a Hyundai Santa Cruz and significantly shorter than a Ford Ranger Super Crew, the E07 is designed as a functional, mid-sized truck for urban driving rather than rugged off-road terrains.
When it comes to its off-road capabilities, the E07 mirrors vehicles like the Honda CRV, offering 207 mm of ground clearance with optional air suspension. Its 600 mm wading depth is adequate but falls short of the Ford Ranger’s 800 mm. The truck’s real appeal lies in its innovative design, including a unique rear end where a touch of a button opens the overhead glass for easy access to the cargo area. While the bed is a modest 94 cm deep and 1.2 meters wide, it’s practical enough for everyday use, though its maximum payload of 300 kg is less than half that of a Hyundai Santa Cruz.
The NEVO E07 is available as a pure electric vehicle, though detailed specifications, including battery capacity and range, remain under wraps. Early reports suggest it will offer around 90 kWh of battery power, with a range of 650 to 700 kilometers, depending on the configuration. The 800-volt charging system allows for quick charging, with a claimed 350 km of range in just 15 minutes. Despite no official pricing, expectations point to a range starting from 300,000 RMB (approximately $42,000).
Inside, the E07 moves away from the typical truck aesthetic with a minimalist, open design featuring soft-touch materials and ample storage. It boasts a 15-inch center screen, zero-gravity seats, and an optional dual-motor powertrain producing nearly 600 horsepower, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in four seconds. For more budget-conscious buyers, a single-motor option with around 300 horsepower is available.
During testing on various road conditions, the NEVO E07’s optional air suspension provided a surprisingly smooth ride. Though it lacks the hefty payload capabilities of larger trucks, the vehicle’s comfort and ease of handling, especially in urban settings, make it an attractive alternative for buyers prioritizing a secure bed and a refined driving experience. Its 3.12-meter wheelbase offers decent legroom, though headroom could be a concern for taller passengers.
Though originally designed to navigate the regulatory landscape of China’s truck market—where pickups face scrapping after 15 years and are restricted from city centers—the E07’s innovative design might find appeal in other markets. However, in regions without these restrictions, it remains to be seen whether consumers will embrace this electric truck-SUV hybrid as a practical solution.
