Kia’s New Electric Camper Van Blows VW’s ID Buzz Out of the Water—Meet The WKNDR

Las Vegas, November 3, 2024:- Kia Motors just revealed an innovative electric camper van concept named “The WKNDR” at SEMA in Las Vegas. This cutting-edge vehicle combines rugged off-road capability with a compact, adaptable interior. One of its standout features is a dynamic winch that displays the pull force, enhancing safety and ease of use—a modern twist on a classic tool. This concept van aims to rival Volkswagen’s ID Buzz, although VW hasn’t introduced a camper version of its electric van, potentially leaving a market gap that Kia seems eager to fill.

Inside, The WKNDR showcases a modular and spacious design with configurable seating, a large wraparound display, and a steering wheel-integrated phone dock for navigation and device access. Kia’s designers maximized interior space, making the compact exterior surprisingly roomy. The vehicle is also eco-conscious, incorporating recycled materials—possibly even repurposed sneakers—and energy-efficient features.

Unique technology defines The WKNDR. Notably, each wheel features a “hydro turbine” mechanism designed to capture wind or water flow while stationary, sending energy back to the solar generator for additional power. Other clever touches include a slide-out table, multiple power outlets (including USB-C), and a digital display at the rear that could be used as a digital license plate or an energy meter.

This lime-green concept vehicle features a roof tent, robust tires, branch deflectors for off-roading, and a cap-forward design for added protection. It has caught the eye of many at SEMA, including Kia’s future design manager Andre Franco Luiz, who noted the van’s compact footprint and expandable roof as his favorite features.

Although The WKNDR is just a concept for now, Kia hasn’t ruled out future production. The brand is collecting feedback at SEMA to assess interest. Meanwhile, observers noted the strategic timing, as VW’s decision to skip a camper variant of the ID Buzz could give Kia a competitive advantage in the adventure EV market.
