Tesla Model Y Juniper Update: What We Know So Far

August 6, 2024 — Tesla’s best-selling Model Y is due for a significant update, often referred to as the Model Y Juniper. Despite the anticipation, it’s unclear when this updated version will hit the market. The Model Y has been a remarkable global success for Tesla, becoming the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2023, surpassing two gas-powered Toyota models with a 64% increase in sales compared to 2022.

Recently, a now-deleted Reddit post revealed what appeared to be images of the Model Y Juniper. The images, although no longer available, showed a full-width red LED light bar at the rear, similar to those seen on Rivian EVs, with a black Tesla script embedded into the rear light bar. The reversing lights seem to be housed in a separate unit. Spy photos also suggest the new Model Y will feature an ambient lighting setup akin to the updated Model 3 and a dark gray dashboard, replacing the current wood trim. Visible wires in the spy shots indicate ongoing development work.

Tesla Model Y

The success of the Model Y underscores the global rise in popularity of electric vehicles, particularly crossovers and SUVs, which accounted for nearly half of all vehicle sales last year. Despite being more popular than Tesla’s more affordable Model 3, which sold less than half as many units, Tesla has reportedly postponed the Model Y’s midlife cycle refresh. Initially expected this year, the Juniper update now appears unlikely to debut in 2024.

Tesla is known for improving its models over time with software updates and minor enhancements. However, major redesigns are rare due to the substantial changes required in production lines and supply chains. The Model Y Juniper update is anticipated to follow the Model 3 Highland’s revisions, including a revised front fascia with new headlight clusters, slimmer taillights, redesigned mirrors, new wheel designs, and fresh exterior colors.

Inside, the Model Y Juniper is expected to adopt the new steering wheel from the Model 3, featuring more buttons and the elimination of stalks on the steering column. The updated interior may also include a redesigned center console with two wireless phone chargers, a revised armrest, and improved storage spaces. Seats are expected to gain new designs and possibly cooling functions, enhancing overall comfort and material quality.

Performance-wise, Tesla continuously enhances its models’ efficiency and range. The Model Y Juniper is likely to feature better acceleration and improved range, potentially aided by a lower drag coefficient and new wheels. The updated Model 3’s suspension system, which significantly improved ride comfort, is expected to be adapted for the Model Y, addressing its stiffness over rough roads.

As for the release date of the Model Y Juniper, Elon Musk has indicated it will not be this year. Given Tesla’s focus on its robotaxi project and the ongoing success of the current Model Y, the wait for the Juniper update may be prolonged. Those considering purchasing a Model Y now may not need to wait, as the vehicle continues to receive incremental improvements. For those who don’t require the Model Y’s space and accessibility, the revised Model 3 might be a more modern and enjoyable option.
