September 19, 2024, Tokyo – Toyota has announced a significant shift in its electric vehicle (EV) battery strategy, aiming to compete directly with Tesla. The Japanese automaker confirmed its commitment to advanced battery technology, revealing plans to launch solid-state batteries that boast a 10-minute charging time and a range of up to 750 miles (1,200 kilometers).
This development marks a critical step in Toyota’s ongoing effort to narrow the gap with Tesla, while potentially positioning itself as a leader in battery technology. The company has been researching battery advancements for several years, achieving a breakthrough last June, which it believes will accelerate the shift to next-generation batteries.
In a recent statement, Toyota’s top executive in India highlighted the reliability of these solid-state batteries, reiterating that they will be available in a few years. The technology aligns with India’s ambitious plans for electrification, where electric vehicle sales, currently at just 2%, are expected to rise to 30% by 2030. India’s Road Transport Minister projected annual EV sales could reach 10 million by the end of the decade, making it a key market for automakers like Toyota.

However, before solid-state batteries hit the production line, Toyota will introduce a performance lithium-ion battery in 2026. This battery promises 20% more range than the current bz4X electric model, while reducing charging time to just 20 minutes.
Despite the excitement around solid-state technology, the timeline for mass production remains unclear. Toyota originally aimed for production to start between 2027 and 2028 but recently revised its target, pushing mass production to 2030 or later. This delay has sparked speculation over whether the company is fine-tuning its marketing strategy or facing technical hurdles. There is also the possibility of further delays, with some suggesting production could be pushed to 2032.

Toyota’s broader electric vehicle strategy includes plans to launch 10 new models by 2030, with the goal of producing 3.5 million electric cars annually. Other major automakers, including Volkswagen, Hyundai, and BMW, are also pursuing solid-state battery technology, intensifying competition in the EV market.
