BYD Shocks the World with Jaw-Dropping New Models at the 2024 Chungdu Motor Show

The 2024 Chungdu International Motor Show has kicked off with a bang, and BYD is making waves by showcasing its latest innovations. The automaker, which has an entire hall dedicated solely to its brands, is capturing attention with some significant debuts. In this report, we’ll focus on the standout reveals from BYD.

BYD’s Seal 06 GT Makes Its Grand Entrance

Earlier this year, the Beijing Auto Show introduced us to BYD’s Ocean M concept, and now at the Chungdu show, the company has unveiled the production version of this vehicle, the Seal 06 GT. Destined for the European market, the Seal GT (as it’s being called) is positioned to compete with models like the Kia EV6. Slightly larger than current electric hatchbacks in Europe, such as the VW ID.3, the Seal GT offers a fresh take on the segment.

While the production version of the Seal GT may not fully capture the sporty essence of the Ocean M concept, it still impresses with a design that embraces its identity as a hatchback rather than pretending to be an SUV. Built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 Evo, the Seal GT will be available with two battery options: a 60 kWh and a 70 kWh LFP blade battery pack, offering a claimed CLTC range of 500 to 600 km.

Inside, the Seal GT shares much of its interior design with the BYD Seal sedan, albeit with a more simplified layout. The interior is expected to resonate well with consumers, particularly those outside of China, who may find the original Seal’s design a bit overwhelming. Notable features include a large center screen and a spacious digital instrument cluster. The Seal GT’s larger size as a hatchback provides a comfortable ride, with a wheelbase of 2.82 meters ensuring ample rear passenger space.

Pricing for the Seal GT has not yet been announced, but it is anticipated to range between 150,000 and 200,000 RMB (approximately $21,000 to $28,000 USD). Stay tuned, as Wheels Boy will be among the first to test drive this exciting new model.

Introducing the BYD J: A New Full-Size MPV

BYD also revealed another model at the show: the J, a full-size MPV that draws inspiration from the successful Denza D9 MPV. The J is essentially a more affordable version of the D9, with a lower starting price of 300,000 RMB (about $42,000 USD), compared to the D9’s 340,000 RMB (around $48,000 USD). Although details about the J’s powertrain are still scarce, it will feature BYD’s DMI 5.0 hybrid system, known for delivering an impressive combined electric and gas range of over 2,000 km. Expect more information and a detailed test drive when the J hits the market next year.
