September 9, 2024, Bangkok — Chinese new energy vehicle giant BYD has expanded its footprint in Southeast Asia by officially launching the all-electric M6 MPV in Thailand. This comes after the model’s debut in Indonesia earlier this year. The unveiling, which took place in Bangkok, introduced two versions of the M6 with starting prices of 829,900 baht (approximately $22,470) and 929,900 baht.

This launch underlines BYD’s strategic push to strengthen its position in the region, offering Thai consumers a new sustainable mobility option in the rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) market. The BYD M6 is powered by an electric motor producing 204 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds, giving it a competitive edge in its segment. It also features BYD’s signature Blade Battery technology with a capacity of 71.8 kWh, allowing the M6 to achieve a New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) range of 530 kilometers on a single charge. This range makes it suitable for both urban commutes and long-distance travel, minimizing concerns about frequent charging.
Measuring 4,710 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,690 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, the M6 offers spacious interiors that can comfortably seat up to six passengers. The combination of ample space and efficient electric performance makes it an attractive option for Thai families seeking a versatile, environmentally conscious vehicle.

Lu Shuang, general manager of BYD’s Asia Pacific Automotive Sales division, highlighted that the M6 is designed to offer Thai families a new mobility experience, emphasizing the model’s role as a reliable partner for everyday life. The launch of the M6 in Thailand marks an important milestone in BYD’s expansion strategy as it seeks to establish a stronger foothold in Southeast Asia.
Thailand, with its increasing interest in EVs and government incentives for greener transportation solutions, represents a key market for BYD’s continued growth. Notably, the M6 is not yet available in BYD’s home market of China. The company had previously introduced a fuel-powered version of the M6 in 2010, which was eventually discontinued as BYD transitioned fully to New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), stopping the production of internal combustion engine vehicles in March 2022.
BYD’s local production plant in Thailand, which became operational in July 2023, plays a pivotal role in the company’s strategy. The facility, which has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles, is the first overseas passenger car plant fully owned by BYD. This plant not only highlights BYD’s commitment to the Thai market but also serves as a hub for the company’s expansion across Southeast Asia.

BYD has already sold over 50,000 vehicles in Thailand, supported by a network of 117 sales outlets across the country. The M6 launch in Thailand follows its introduction in Indonesia, where it became the first all-electric MPV available in that market. This move aligns with BYD’s broader international strategy to capture a significant share of the global EV market.
In August 2023, BYD sold 373,383 NEVs globally, marking a 30.5% year-on-year increase. Of those sales, 31,451 came from overseas markets, showcasing the growing demand for BYD’s NEV offerings and the company’s rising influence on the global stage. With its focus on electrification and innovative battery technology, BYD is positioning itself as a leading player in the worldwide shift toward sustainable transportation.
