September 26, 2024, Beijing—BYD has once again impressed the market with its innovations, recently unveiling the updated Song Pro DM-i, a popular compact plug-in hybrid SUV. The announcement comes as the company continues its global expansion, with 240,000 vehicles exported in 2023 alone. To further improve vehicle quality, BYD has developed professional test drive sites in major cities across China.
The BYD Song Pro DM-i is available in four trim levels, priced between $15,980 and $20,230. The second-generation model is equipped with the advanced DM 5.0 system, enhancing fuel efficiency and overall performance. From January to August 2023, 158,345 units of the Song Pro were sold, solidifying its status as one of China’s best-selling crossovers.

Visually, the Song Pro DM-i adopts the brand’s “dragon face” design with slimmer smoked headlights, a trapezoidal honeycomb-patterned grille, and a bolder front bumper featuring fang-like details. The car’s side profile is enhanced with darkened window frames and new five-spoke alloy wheels, while the rear showcases a sleeker design with a minimalist “BYD” logo replacing the previous “Build Your Dreams” branding.
The SUV retains compact dimensions, measuring 4,735mm in length, 1,860mm in width, and 1,710mm in height, while offering a spacious interior. The wheelbase of 2,712mm ensures stability, and ground clearance is expected to remain at 200mm, similar to the previous model. Curb weight ranges from 1,635 to 1,765 kg, depending on the configuration.
Under the hood, the Song Pro DM-i features a 1.5-liter engine delivering 101 hp and 126 Nm, paired with a front-axle electric motor producing 163 hp. The hybrid system offers two battery options: 13 kWh and 18.3 kWh, allowing for pure electric ranges of 75 km and 115 km, respectively. Acceleration to 100 km/h is achieved in 8.3 to 8.5 seconds, depending on the battery size, with a top speed of 180 km/h.

Fuel consumption in low-battery mode is notably low, ranging between 4.8 and 4.9 liters per 100 km, and the combined range of the gasoline engine and electric motor extends to 1,400 km. Inside, the BYD Song Pro DM-i offers a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen with the DiLink multimedia system and an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel. The interior combines traditional Chinese design with modern minimalism, featuring luxurious touches like a crystal gear lever, 31 shades of ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.
Additional high-tech features include 50W wireless phone charging, intelligent voice control, air quality monitoring, and NFC smartphone key functionality. The SUV also includes DiPilot, BYD’s level 2 driver assistance system, which offers adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring.

The trunk capacity of 407 liters can be expanded to 1,430 liters with the second-row seats folded down, making it suitable for long journeys and family use. The new Song Pro is already available for order in China, with prices ranging from $16,000 to $20,200. The second-generation model continues to set high standards in its segment, offering a perfect blend of advanced technology, design, and performance. Time will tell if the new model can maintain its strong market position, but early indicators suggest it is well on its way to continued success.
