October 3, 2024, Beijing – The BYD Xia plug-in hybrid MPV has surfaced in the latest Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filings, further igniting excitement as its launch approaches. The vehicle, which had its exterior first unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show, has already begun pre-sales as of September 2024, with a starting price of 289,000 yuan (approximately $40,600). Positioned beneath the existing Denza D9 in BYD’s lineup, the Xia will be the automaker’s most affordable MPV.
The Denza D9, which starts at 339,000 yuan, was China’s best-selling MPV in 2023. The Xia’s competitive pricing suggests it could attract buyers from both the Denza D9 and other models in its segment, including rivals like the Toyota Sienna and Buick GL8. The Xia integrates BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology and DiPilot intelligent driving system, showcasing the latest advancements in the company’s plug-in hybrid lineup. As part of the Dynasty series, the MPV adopts the signature Dragon Face design, characterized by a bold and recognizable front look. The large grille, accentuated by decorative “dragon whiskers” stripes, creates a dynamic, layered 3D effect. A new “X” logo is prominently displayed on the chrome horizontal bar, while contrasting colors on the grille stripes add visual depth.
The side profile of the Xia features sleek design elements, including integrated door handles for both front and rear doors, enhancing the vehicle’s streamlined appearance. The roofline remains relatively flat, contributing to a spacious cabin feel while maintaining a modern look. At the rear, BYD’s wraparound tail lights and the Dynasty family’s signature elements are evident, with the “BYD” badge and “Xia” character on the tailgate. These design touches connect the vehicle to the Dynasty lineup while introducing specific new details.
The Xia measures 5,145 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,805 mm in height, with a generous wheelbase of 3,145 mm. It comes standard with 18-inch wheels and offers optional features like a panoramic roof, front side radar, a rear spoiler with a camera, and BYD’s Union-C intelligent damping control system for improved comfort and stability. The DiPilot intelligent driving assistance system and DiLink 150 smart cockpit are also included, providing advanced safety and connectivity features.
Under the hood, the Xia is powered by BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid technology, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor. The engine delivers a maximum output of 115 kW, while the electric motor offers up to 200 kW. The base model features a 20.39 kWh battery, providing a pure electric range of 80 km. For those seeking more electric range, a version with a 38 kWh battery will be available, offering a range of 145 km. The vehicle’s fuel consumption is reported at 6.5 liters per 100 km, making it an efficient choice in the MPV market.
The Xia’s launch is expected to impact market dynamics, potentially drawing consumers away from the higher-priced Denza D9 and expanding BYD’s presence in the MPV segment. Its entry into the market could significantly enhance the appeal of BYD’s Dynasty series.
