Shenzhen, China, September 2024 – BYD, a leading player in the electric vehicle (EV) market, has released its August sales figures for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), showcasing the continued strength of its top models while revealing mixed results across its lineup.
In August, the Song family emerged as BYD’s best-selling model, with 76,790 units sold, marking a significant 32.54% year-on-year increase and a 17.65% rise from July. The Song family includes models from both the Dynasty and Ocean series, with the Dynasty series alone selling 36,363 units in August—a 72.8% increase year-on-year and a 28.6% jump from July. The Ocean series also performed exceptionally, with 40,487 units sold, reflecting a 99.6% year-on-year growth and nearly identical monthly gains.
Following closely behind was the Chen family, which sold 7,457 units in August, up 56.56% from the previous year but down slightly by 4.19% from July. Interestingly, the Chen family had briefly outperformed the Song family in July, marking its first stint at the top spot in over a year.
BYD’s Seal family also posted a remarkable surge, with 54,835 units sold in August, an astounding 862.02% increase year-on-year and a strong 63.22% rise from July. This growth is largely attributed to the enhanced production capacity of models featuring BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology, introduced in May.
Other models showed steady gains, with the Yuan family selling 42,179 units in August, marking a 29.14% year-on-year increase and a 3% monthly rise. The Seagull model, launched in April 2023 as BYD’s most affordable option, sold 4,949 units in August, representing a 17.53% year-on-year increase and a 12.94% rise from July. The 2025 Seagull variant, launched in August, continued to attract buyers with its unchanged pricing and core specifications.
However, not all models experienced growth. The Han family saw sales drop by 2.18% year-on-year to 17,290 units in August, reflecting a 5.67% decline from July. The Chaser 05 model, despite a 26.8% year-on-year increase, experienced a sharp 40.1% drop from July, with 15,333 units sold. The Dolphin model followed a similar pattern, selling 15,164 units, down 53.6% year-on-year, but up 22.3% from July.
The Tang family remained relatively stable with 12,169 units sold in August, down slightly by 1.41% year-on-year but showing a minor 0.11% monthly increase. Meanwhile, BYD’s new technology platform, e-platform 3.0 Evo, delivered mixed results. The Celan 07 sold 7,023 units in August, reflecting just a 0.23% rise from July, while the E2 model saw a sharp 60.6% year-on-year decline, with only 692 units sold. The Frig 07 performed poorly, with just 409 units sold in August, marking a steep 91.12% year-on-year drop, despite a 2.43% monthly increase.
In the broader NEV portfolio, which includes both passenger and commercial vehicles, BYD recorded positive trends. The company sold 378,854 units of passenger NEVs and 2,229 commercial NEVs in August. Within the passenger segment, BYD’s Dynasty and Ocean series achieved sales of 352,000 units.
BYD’s premium brand, Denza, saw a decline with 9,989 units delivered in August, down 13.25% year-on-year and 3.39% from July. In contrast, Fang Cheng Bao, BYD’s personalized sub-brand, experienced significant growth, delivering 4,876 vehicles in August, up 164.7% year-on-year. Yangwang, BYD’s ultra-luxury sub-brand, delivered 310 vehicles, including 303 U8 off-road SUVs and 7 U9 electric supercars.
