Chinese EV Breakthrough: Neo’s New 150 kWh Battery Powers Stunning 554-Mile Journey

September 5, 2024 | China

Neo, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) startup, has demonstrated the impressive capabilities of its new 150 kWh battery pack through a real-world test conducted by a Neo owner. The test, documented online by YouTuber Rand, showcased the battery pack’s ability to travel 554 miles (891 kilometers) on a single charge before requiring a recharge.

The 150 kWh semi-solid-state battery, which became available at Neo’s Power Swap stations on June 1, 2024, represents a significant advancement in EV technology. Unlike traditional liquid electrolyte batteries, this semi-solid-state technology combines liquid and solid electrolytes, enhancing energy density and potentially improving safety and charging speed.

In the test, Rand replaced his Neo ET5 sedan’s 75 kWh battery with the new 150 kWh pack. After starting with a 42% charge and an estimated range of 148.5 miles (239 kilometers), the vehicle’s range projection jumped to 609 miles (981 kilometers) post-swap. During his road trip, Rand managed to travel 554 miles before arriving at a swap station with the battery at 0% charge and only 1 kilometer of remaining range. Despite falling short of the 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) range advertised by Neo, the performance exceeded expectations compared to many U.S. EVs, which typically offer less range.

The impressive range highlights the benefits of Neo’s battery swapping system, allowing for quick battery replacements at numerous stations, thus eliminating lengthy charging waits. While the 150 kWh pack offers exceptional range for long trips, many drivers might find a more modest range sufficient for daily use, addressing concerns over range anxiety and making EVs more accessible.

Neo’s approach offers flexibility by enabling drivers to access extended range only when needed, potentially transforming long-distance travel and making EV ownership more practical and convenient.
