Is This Tiny Car the Future of Urban Transportation? KG Motors Unveils Innovative Solution

KG Motors, a Japanese startup, is making waves in the urban mobility sector with its new creation—a compact electric car designed to tackle traffic congestion in big cities. Launched in 2022, this ambitious project is the brainchild of a small team of just five employees, who aim to introduce the “minimum mobility” concept to the Japanese market next year and produce ultra-compact vehicles by 2025, including models with autonomous driving capabilities.

Revolutionary Design for Urban Efficiency

KG Motors’ new electric car is a single-seater with a length of 2,490 mm, a width of 1,113 mm, and a height of 1,465 mm. The primary goal was to keep production costs low, achieved through a simple retro design using fewer panel molds. This design choice aligns with the findings of a government survey, which revealed that 70% of Japanese drivers commute alone on weekdays, dropping to 50% on weekends.

Key Features and Benefits

The compact electric vehicle boasts a peak power of 5 kW, sufficient for urban travel, with a range of 100 km and a top speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). Charging the battery takes about 5 hours. Despite its minimalist design, the car includes manual windows and air conditioning to ensure a comfortable driving experience.

The car’s classification under Japan’s revised 2020 law for single-seater EVs means reduced checks and taxes, comparable to those for mopeds. With operating costs as low as 1 yen per kilometer, it offers significant savings compared to traditional vehicles. Maintenance costs are also minimal, estimated at one-tenth of those for light vehicles traveling 10,000 km annually.

Future Prospects and Market Potential

KG Motors’ innovative vehicle will feature over-the-air software updates, enhancing its functionality and user experience. Given the popularity of small cars in Japan, particularly for urban use, the minimum mobility concept could revolutionize the market. CEO Kusunoki Kinari hopes to emulate the success of startups in the US and China, establishing KG Motors as a leading player in Japan’s automotive industry.

Extensive testing is planned for 2024, with production set to begin in 2025 if all goes according to plan. The anticipated price for this micro vehicle is around $6,600.
