MG’s All-New Electric Crossover Launches at Just $14,000 – A Game-Changer for the EV Market

October 15, 2024 – Shanghai, China:- MG unveiled its latest all-electric crossover, the MG ES5, in the Chinese market today. This compact family car features a stylish design, advanced technology, and a range of up to 525 km. MG also announced plans to bring the ES5 to Europe, where it will compete with the BYD Atto 3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Kia EV3.

The MG ES5’s pricing is one of the most anticipated details, with a price range between $14,000 and $21,000 in China. This makes it an attractive option for those seeking performance and value in the electric vehicle market. MG also renamed the model from “S5” to “ES5” to emphasize its all-electric nature. Built on the modular Nebula platform, which is used in the MG 4, the ES5 features rear-wheel drive, optimized performance, and energy efficiency.

The design draws inspiration from the MG 4, with sharp headlights, a sleek grille, silver roof rails, and Y-shaped tail lamps. Buyers can choose between 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels. Slightly larger than the MG ZS, the ES5 has a length of 4476 mm, a width of 1849 mm, and a height of 1621 mm. Depending on the configuration, it weighs between 1685 and 1740 kg.

The base model comes with a 170-horsepower electric motor and 250 Nm of torque. More powerful versions are expected, potentially featuring 204 or 245 hp engines, similar to the MG 4. Currently, the 170 hp version boasts an acceleration to 100 km/h in 8 seconds and a top speed of 170 km/h. Two battery options are available, 49.1 kWh and 62.2 kWh, both developed with CATL, allowing for thinner batteries and a lower center of gravity for better handling.

With a power reserve ranging from 425 to 525 km under the Chinese CLTC cycle, MG expects slightly lower figures for European markets under WLTP standards. The ES5 also features MacPherson front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension for enhanced comfort.

Inside, the ES5 sports a large touchscreen, a digital instrument panel, and a three-spoke steering wheel with user-friendly controls. The gear selector is located on the steering column, and the center console features a hollow design for extra storage, wireless smartphone charging, and cup holders.

With its combination of modern design, competitive pricing, and technological advancements, the MG ES5 is expected to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market. As more details emerge, it is clear that MG is positioning this new crossover as a serious contender, offering families a practical and comfortable EV option at an affordable price.
