The new battery cell, named the “Bat Cell,” is the first of its kind to be designed and produced in India, and it promises to revolutionize the EV market with its advanced technology and impressive performance.
During the unveiling, Ola’s CEO compared the 4680 cell to the existing 2170 cell, which is widely used by luxury EV manufacturers globally. The 4680 cell is substantially larger, with five times the energy capacity of the 2170, enabling faster charging and longer range for electric vehicles. “This is the 5G of battery cells,” the CEO stated, emphasizing the cell’s cutting-edge advancements.
The 4680 cell, developed at Ola’s gigafactory, is the result of extensive research and innovation. The company has filed more than 70 patents related to the cell’s design and manufacturing process, underscoring its commitment to indigenous technology development. Unlike the 2170 cell, which is imported by many manufacturers, the 4680 cell is fully developed in India, symbolizing a major leap forward in the country’s EV capabilities.
One of the key highlights of the 4680 cell is its rapid charging capability. According to Ola, the new cell can charge 50% faster than its predecessor, significantly reducing the time needed to fully charge an electric vehicle. This feature addresses one of the major concerns of EV users and is expected to enhance the appeal of electric vehicles in the Indian market.
In addition to faster charging, the 4680 cell is also lighter and more efficient. The cell is designed to be the heart of Ola’s upcoming products, including their popular S1 scooter. A demonstration during the event showcased the 4680-powered battery pack, which is set to be integrated into Ola’s EVs starting in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026.
