September 22, 2024 – Tel Aviv, Israel:- In a world where premium features, enhanced safety, and sustainability are becoming standard expectations for vehicles, traditional carmakers face growing pressure to innovate—especially in the realm of electric powertrains. While an answer to these demands may still be elusive for many, Israeli startup City Transformer believes it has found a solution.
City Transformer first gained attention a few years ago with the debut of its first electric vehicle (EV), also called the City Transformer (CT). This adaptable EV stands out for its ability to modify its track width based on driving conditions. When traveling at higher speeds, the car widens to 1.4 meters to provide more stability. In tighter urban settings or while parking, the wheels retract, making the vehicle just 1 meter wide—an ideal feature for crowded city streets. With scissor doors, parking in tight spaces becomes significantly easier.
Despite being an electric vehicle tailored for urban environments, the City Transformer retains compact proportions, measuring 2.5 meters long with a 1.8-meter wheelbase and standing 1.58 meters tall. While technically a microcar, the startup claims that the CT offers the comfort, safety, and premium experience typically associated with SUVs. Inside, it seats two people in tandem, with enough space for luggage and safety features found in conventional automobiles.
The CT was officially unveiled in 2021, with deliveries originally slated for late 2024. While it’s unclear if that timeline will be met, City Transformer recently introduced an updated version, the CT2, earlier this year. The CT2 is considered the second generation of the adaptable EV, though details about new premium features remain undisclosed. The CT1, which was previously available for reservations, is now considered a prototype, leaving some early adopters uncertain about their orders. One major change is pricing: the CT1 had a steep price tag of €122,500, while the new CT2 will be available for just €6,000.
Despite the changes, interest in the City Transformer remains high. While not the first foldable car as some media have labeled it, the CT2 is an adaptable electric vehicle designed to close the gap between microcars and regular passenger vehicles. Its goal is to address urban issues such as pollution, rising fuel costs, and the need for independent, sustainable transportation.
The CT2 promises an estimated range of up to 180 kilometers per charge, a top speed of 90 km/h in extended mode, and dual motors offering a combined 15 kW of power. It will come equipped with standard features such as disc brakes, cruise control, forward-collision warning systems, and blind-spot detection. City Transformer also emphasizes the use of innovative and eco-friendly materials inside the car, although specific details remain vague, with mentions of natural fibers, recycled components, and eco-friendly composites.
The CT2 aims to revolutionize urban driving, reducing the vehicle’s carbon footprint both during production and throughout its lifecycle. Its compact size gives it a significant advantage in daily traffic, making it a vehicle worth watching as it seeks to make a meaningful impact on city life. Whether the CT2 will live up to the hype remains to be seen, but its mission to redefine sustainable luxury and urban transportation certainly positions it as an electric vehicle to keep an eye on.
